Pen Pals and Exploding Dots

We had a package this morning from our pen pal, Ian! (He was the kiddo with the same syndrome that Auggie had in Wonder.) Each child received a letter! And he wants to Skype with us and send us some videos! They were super excited to get mail and are already writing back.

During i-time today, I shared Exploding Dots as a strategy for addition. Some of our kids already learned this as an extension but I tried it with the kiddos that are still having trouble with adding and subtracting large numbers. (We'll be moving on to subtraction later in the week.) Here are the links to videos that explain what it is but see if your child can show you...

After gym and reading our letters from Ian, we finished the chapter on Sports Fiction in Nightmare at the Book Fair. We also read the Adventure chapter and began the Science Fiction chapter too. As we read, we are documenting the characteristics of each genre of literature. However, the author, humorously puts every possible characteristic into the chapters so they are fun to read. We read independently and then worked with vocabulary for/and read a new story in StoryWorks. We also continued working on our small moments stories: drafting, revising, editing and some began publishing. In Math Workshop, we split up into 3 groups: equivalent fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions and a project to help secure our understanding of fractions. Finally, we brought out our secondary sources (textbooks) and learned a bit about Ohio and Ohio's history. Did you know we are considered Ohioans? (Alejandro thought that was very interesting!)
