New beginnings

Since we ended our read aloud of The Wild Robot yesterday, we began a new book today! We also began a new unit in Math Workshop so today felt like we started some new things.

Our day began with morning choice and i-time, followed by Music. In meeting, we shared what we did/do when the power goes out (because if you live over where I live, this happened for a couple of hours last night!). We then began our new book, Nightmare at the Book Fair by Dan Gutman. This book is an exaggerated look into the different genres of literature through a kid that is actually IN each different genre! Today, he was stuck in Horror and Sports Fiction... We read independently and then completed a comprehension quiz on The Curse of Winter and kept on drafting, revising and editing our small moment narratives. After lunch and recess, we completed our Math 4 Today assessment and then moved on to fractions. First of all, this group has a great base of knowledge about fractions! Then, some took a pre-test over adding and subtracting fractions before working with sharing pizzas. We all shared pizzas equally among children and had to work to figure out how much each kiddo got. Beware-we were all hungry for pizza after this so they might be asking! After discussing and sharing our strategies, we moved on to Science. We have a great understanding of what weathering and erosion is so now we are applying it to make brochures for specific landforms sharing this information.
